UPDATE: Fatal Fabens Crash Victim Identified As Tornillo High School Teacher
El Paso County sheriff’s deputies are at the scene of a fatal accident in the Lower Valley community of Fabens.
According to El Paso County Sheriff’s officials, the accident happened just after 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, at the intersection of Alameda Avenue (Texas Highway 20) and R.C. Elam Road.
Sheriff’s officials said a white 1993 Honda Accord driven by 54-year-old Bradley Graves was traveling west on Alameda when it suddenly veered off the roadway and collided with a tree.
Graves was a teacher at Tornillo High School.
Graves died at the scene. He was the only occupant of the vehicle.
Crews blocked the eastbound lanes of Alameda Avenue for nearly three hours to investigate the accident.
Investigators noted there was no evidence to show that brakes were applied before the accident. Prior to the accident, witnesses reported the vehicle weaving in and out of its lane before striking the tree.
Graves was wearing a seat belt and the truck’s air bags deployed.
Investigators said a pre-existing medical condition is suspected as a factor in the crash.
According to a letter sent to staff by Tornillo Independent School District superintendent Paul Vranish, Graves had been having neurological problems for months. Vranish said Graves suffered from headaches, disorientation, and visual problems that on several occasions caused him to return home from work.
Vranish said in the letter that Graves was headed home from the school because of these ailments when the crash occurred.
