Bump In The Road Causing Bad Problems Near Downtown
El Paso streets can be bumpy at times and a little hard on our cars.
But after working on an intersection for most of last year, the City of El Paso’s Engineering Department has left a bump in one road that’s difficult to avoid or ignore.
It’s located on heavily-traveled intersection at West Yandell and North Oregon Street, just blocks from Downtown El Paso. And if you’ve driven over it, you won’t soon forget it.
“It’s ugly!” one driver said.
“It’s too bumpy!” said another, while pointing to the scrapes in the road.
Some drivers told us they’ve hit it so hard, even at or under the 30 mile per hour speed limit, their cars bottom out on the bump.
“I hit my undercarriage a couple of times on it,” said El Pasoan Omar Lucero. “I thought they were gonna fix it when they were re-doing all of this, but I guess they skipped that bump or something.”
When we told the City Engineering Department about the bump, they indicated that they need to take a look at it.
“The project was assigned in accordance with our standards and we need to provide for the drainage and be able to account for the cross slope of the roadway itself,” said Sam Rodriguez, Engineering Division Manager for the City of El Paso.
Rodriguez said possible fixes, that would continue to allow for proper drainage, include lowering the speed limit or actual construction changes.
“We design to what the posted speeds are for the roadway,” he said. “Maybe we need to take a look at that again just to see if that’s really how they’re using it.”
In the meantime, beware of the bump!
“I try to aviod it when I can, but when there’s traffic you can’t avoid it,” said Lucero, after being told the bump is designed to help drainage. “Drainage? And so what happens to our cars when we hit them?”
