Tiguas Get $142K In Grants For Language Preservation, Other Projects
The Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo on Monday was awarded more than $140,000 in grants for a language preservation project and other improvements.
U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes, D-Texas, announced $142,451 in grants for the Tigua tribe from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and U.S. Department of Transportation.
According to a news release, Health and Human Services is giving the tribe $99,970 to support a sustainable language project in the El Paso region. The Language Preservation and Maintenance Grants project will conduct assessments of native languages, plan language programs and implement language projects that support long-term language preservation goals.
“Ysleta del Sur Pueblo has been an important part of our community’s cultural heritage for nearly 330 years,” Reyes said. “These grants will help them continue to enhance our community’s cultural vitality and growth.”
The Tiguas will also get $42,481 from the U.S. Department of Transportation, awarded through the Texas Department of Transportation, to construct a parking area for the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo Tigua Indian Museum and Cultural Center. The money will go towards a safe and durable parking area for visitors that will incorporate artistic traffic control signs encouraging drivers to drive safely.
