Coca Cola Plant Evacuated After Ammonia Leak

The Magnolia Coca-Cola Bottling Co. was evacuated after an ammonia leak in a pump room Tuesday in East El Paso.

Hazmat crews were called to the bottling center about 4:30 p.m. at Gateway West Boulevard and Lomaland Drive, where there was a strong smell of ammonia.

Fire crews evacuated the building and made sure everyone was safe.

A representative with Magnolia Coca-Cola Bottling Co., who did not want to be identified, said everyone who works inside that building was evacuated. He said they’re all safe and accounted for.

A fire lieutenant at the scene said that the ammonia leaked from a refrigeration area.

Workers who were pumping out the ammonia said the building has a good ventilation system that’s making their work easier.

Ammonia is a compound that can be liquid or gas. It’s found in many household cleaning products, but it can be very dangerous if not handled carefully.

Crews were being cautious during the cleanup, and some could be seen occasionally walking in and out of the building.

The representative said it’s not clear how long the building will remain evacuated.
