UPDATE: Police Identify Man Arrested In Chase, Car Crash
Police said a man almost hit pedestrians crossing Mesa Street in the Cincinnati Avenue Entertainment District before leading police on a chase that ended with a police cruiser nearly being hit and a car crash in the Lower Valley.
There was an increased police presence in the area Tuesday night when police say 21-year-old Jesus Mora drove a white Honda Accord driving at a high rate of speed passed by officers on North Mesa Street. A uniformed police officer was assisting pedestrians as they crossed Mesa Street and Mora refused to stop when directed to do so by the officer, almost striking the officer and other pedestrians.
Police officers jumped into their patrol cars and chased after him. Police said the man was driving erratically and would not stop when officers tried to pull him over.
The man continued driving before crashing about 12 miles away on Loop 375 in the Lower Valley. The Accord then hit a concrete barrier. The man was taken to the hospital for treatment for his injuries. No one else was hurt.
A police sergeant said the man nearly hit a patrol car with a police officer in it.
Mora was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, aggravated assault and evading arrest.
Police said Mora had a DWI conviction in April 2011. He also had an outstanding municipal court warrant. He was booked into the El Paso County Jail with bond set a $45,279.
