Crime Victim’s Walk For Help Hope And Healing
The 6th annual Crime Victim’s Walk on Saturday was an emotional day for families and friends whose lives have been touched and scarred by violence.
125 registered walkers began their 20-mile journey at Resler Drive and Helen of Troy Drive and arrived at the Crime Victim’s Memorial on Yarbrough Drive.
“My baby daughter, she was 2 years-old,” said father Jesus Villezcas who wore a shirt to commemorate his daughter, Joanna. The toddler died in July. Jesus’ ex-girlfriend, Maria Hernandez, is charged with the little girl’s murder.
“This is a great event for parents to be aware of everything, you know a little daughter or something,” said Villezcas overcome with emotion. “When (children are) that small they can’t really talk. Just to be aware.”
Villezcas joined with hundreds of others to walk 20 miles in order to take a stand against violence.
“We came to El Paso today from Las Cruces to spread our story about the tragedy with our daughter,” said father John Wax.
Violence took Wax’s 15-year-old daughter, Ashley’s life back in 2005. He witnessed his teenage daughter’s ex-boyfriend shoot and kill her in front of their own home.
“If you see domestic violence or somebody that is pulling away from friends, get with them, talk to them,” said Wax. “If you notice somebody, a mother or father being beaten, report it. Call the police, put a stop to it.”
Now the Wax family is trying to reach other 27,000 crime victims in the El Paso – Las Cruces region and inspire parents like Villezcas, who are still dealing with tragedy.
“Just to take care of your loved ones,” said VIllezcas. “Be aware of everything and God bless everyone.”
