Border Aids Partnership Gives Out Grants

A grant-awarding event held Thursday was small.

There couldn’t have been more than 40 people, but the number of lives the Border AIDS Partnership is saving, can be in the thousands.

The organization works in conjunction with the Elton John Aids AIDS Foundation.

One of the many things the partnership does is help smaller organizations, such as the Center Against Family Violence, get funding.

The Border Aids AIDS Partnership received a grant of more than $133,000 on Thursday.

The money will helps help educate El Pasoans and spread the word on prevention and treatment of HIV and AIDS. The checks given out by the Border Aids Partnership Thursday ranged from $2,000 all the way up to $20,000.

Stephanie Karr, executive director of the Center for Family Violence, explained how she plans to put the money to use.

“We use these dollars to educate those who come to us about the issues related to HIV/AIDS” Karr said. “Research has shown use that those persons who are victims of domestic violence and sexual assault have higher rates of instances of HIV and AIDS as a result of what they’ve been exposed to.”
