5 killed when truck crashes into their car in East El Paso County

El Paso County Sheriff’s deputies have arrested a man who allegedly killed five people when the truck he was driving crashed into their vehicle.

Alberto Coronado, 23, has been charged with five counts of intoxication manslaughter.

The collision happened at the intersection of John Henrry and Saiesteban in Montana Vista in East El Paso County on Sunday.

Investigators said Coronado ran a stop sign and then hit the Chevy Impala that was carrying two adults and three children.

Eyewitnesses were still in shock after the collision, describing a horrific scene as unimaginable.

“We saw the truck going really fast, it was probably going 50-60 mph,” said Rosario Varela. She was walking home from a friend’s house with her sister and father when they heard the collision.

“It sounded like an explosion, then it was like pure dirt,” Varela said. “We started running to see if everyone was OK.”

But their eyes weren’t ready for what they were about to see.

“The person in the front she was bleeding,” Varela said. “The person in the back was trying to move cause the air bag was on her head.”

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Angelica Becerra said the truck was loaded with pallets of cement bags which added to the force of the impact.

The Varela sisters said they saw the driver of the F-250 get out of the vehicle.

“He just started yelling, cussing, bad words at people,” they said.

Stephanie Varela said the hardest part of the whole situation was hearing one of the victims, a little boy just before he died.

“He was just screaming like he was hurt,” she said.
