El Paso Chick-fil-A Supporters Show Up in Massive Numbers
Massive crowds showed up throughout the day at El Paso’s Chick-fil-A locations, responding to a call from former-presidential candidate, Mike Huckabee, who had dubbed Aug. 1 as “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day.”
This came after Chick-fil-A’s president, Dan Cathy, publicly denounced same-sex unions two weeks ago.
Cathy’s comments as well as news that the chain has donated millions of dollars to anti-gay marriage groups caused several big-city mayors and Hollywood stars to speak out against the fast-food chain.
Supporters of the chain’s president bought chicken sandwiches to show their support.
“I’m here to show support for the Cathy family,” one customer at El Paso’s Sunland Park Mall location said. “They stand up for the Biblical definition of marriage and there are a whole lot of people here who feel the same way.”
ABC-7 crews had been granted permission by management at the Sunland Park Mall to film the lines swelling outside of the Chick-fil-A location at the mall’s food court.
After management learned the lines were full of supporters of Chick-fil-A’s president, ABC-7 crews were told to leave by mall managers and security guards.
No reason was given as to why the mall had first granted permission for the crowds to be filmed and then changed their minds upon learning of “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day.”
ABC-7 spoke with members of El Paso’s gay community who all gave the same response – they will never go to Chick-fil-A again.
“Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but this is my personal opinion,” El Pasoan Paul Jensen said. “I am going to spend my money where it’s appreciated. I’ll go out of my way to go to a gay-friendly business.”
