Moving Day Approaches for El Paso Times and City Hall Employees

Workers at the Sotoa building confirm the El Paso Times will be relocating its headquarters to part of the downtown structure.

Construction crews have been working at the building, located at 500 W. Overland, making improvements to the building’s first floor in order to meet the needs of the newspaper, workers said.

The current location of the El Paso Times, located on N. Campbell, was purchased by the City on Dec. 17, to be used to house local government offices, including the mayor and city council.

Since the purchase, a city spokeswoman says construction crews have been working tirelessly at the N. Campbell building, of which the CIty has assumed 70-percent control.

As construction progresses, and the newspaper’s resources, equipment and staff are relocated, the City will continue its renovation work to the remaining portion of the second floor and move on to the first floor.

City spokeswoman Juli Lozano says the offices to be housed in the former El Paso Times building should be completed and occupied by mid-March.

City council voted to relocate local government operations after an ordinance was passed calling for the demolition of city hall and the construction of a baseball park in its place.

Both property managers at the Sotoa building and El Paso Times management declined to comment for this story.
