DACC nursing instructor hit by NMSU vehicle dies
A Dona Ana Community College nursing instructor who was hit by a campus vehicle on the New Mexico State University campus died Friday night, according to family members.
Lucy Montes-Sandoval, 53, was hit by a woman driving an NMSU Ford Taurus on Jan. 17.
NMSU police said Catherine Parra, 22, was turning left onto Stewart Street when she hit Sandoval who was in the crosswalk.
“According to statements at the scene, (Parra) had looked down at her radio and when she looked back up, she saw the victim, Ms. Sandoval, rolling off the hood of her car,” Lt. Lynn Hodges told ABC-7.
Sandoval was in critical condition in the intensive care unit at University Medical Center since the incident.
Family members told ABC-7 Sandoval died Friday night.
“It is with the deepest sadness and pain, we write to inform that our beautiful mother and wife passed away peacefully last night at 10:22 p.m. while at the University Medical Center ICU in El Paso. Despite the valiant efforts of the medical staff and her strong will, she was unable to overcome the trauma she incurred. She touched the lives of so many people. The immense outpouring of love our family has received is truly incredible and for this, we as a family are extremely grateful. Our family is in the process of planning services for her and will update with details,” the family wrote in a statement.
