John Garmon hit and killed by vehicle in East El Paso
A man was struck and killed by a vehicle while crossing a street, police said.
Police have identified the man as 72-year-old John Garmon, a former El Paso media personality.
Garmon is remembered as a KVIA newsman, who worked at the station in the ’80s.
ABC-7’s Round the Clock news team saw special traffic investigators searching the scene in efforts to find out what happened.
Police said just before 8 p.m. Saturday evening Garmon was crossing Edgemere Boulevard near Ivanhoe Drive.
It appears a car traveling west on Edgemere wasn’t able to stop in time and hit Garmon, officials said.
The car did remain at the scene while emergency personnel arrived.
According to police, Garmon was taken to Del Sol Medical center, where he later died.
As of Sunday morning, no charges had been filed against the driver.
“There is not a crosswalk in that area, but the pedestrian was crossing at an intersection,” El Paso Police Department spokesman Javier Sambrano said.
Police said they are looking into whether speed or alcohol were factors.
