Former Mayor Raymond L. Telles Sr. has died

Former El Paso Mayor Raymond L. Telles Sr. has died, a close family member told ABC-7 Friday afternoon. He was 97 years old.

Telles was El Paso’s first Hispanic mayor. He served from April 1957 to April 1961.

He was also the first Hispanic to become mayor of a major U.S. city.

Later, President John F. Kennedy appointed Telles the U.S. ambassador to Costa Rica.
