Anthony, Texas mayor Art Franco pleads guilty to state felony, plans to resign

Anthony Texas Mayor Artemio “Art” Franco stood quietly before 210th District Court Judge Gonzalo Garcia Tuesday morning and pled guilty to a charge of Tampering with Governmental Records.

Garcia sentenced Franco to three years probation and 150 hours of community service. He also has to pay restitution charges of $3,763 to the U.S. Dept of Agriculture.

The charges stemmed from a letter Franco wrote in March 2010 for then City of Anthony employee Oscar Flores in which Franco understated how much Flores made so Flores could obtain subsidized housing.

After the hearing ABC-7 asked Franco’s attorney if his Franco would continue as mayor of Anthony. ABC-7was told Franco plans to resign at council’s next meeting on May 14.
