Report reveals new details on the death of Daniel Saenz
ABC-7 has obtained new information on a man who died while in police custody.
The city released a custodial death report for Daniel Saenz, a bodybuilder and former Mr. El Paso.
The3 pagereport indicates that Daniel Saenz displayed aggressive behavior and was killed by a gunshot to the left shoulder through his chest and heart. Saenz was being taken to the El paso County Detention Facilities on charges of assault on a public servant, assault causing bodily injury and injury to an elderly person when he was shot.
This happened after Saenz was taken to Del Sol Medical Center earlier in the day for having extremely high blood pressure. Once there, the report says he attacked patients, staff and an off-duty police officer.
Saenz was then taken to the detention facility where he continued showing aggressive behavior. The report states Saenz struck the entrance door with his head, causing injury. This prevented Saenz from being booked and prompted another trip to the hospital. On the way out,while hancuffed, Saenz started to struggle, and that’s when Officer J. Flores shot Saenz.
“El Paso Crimes Against Persons Unit is here along with the shooting review team and the Texas Rangers,” said police spokesperson Daryl Petry, Hespoke toABC-7 on the night of the shooting. Petry mentions two law enforcement agencies were investigating the killing of Saenz.
The custodial death report says that Saenz was arrested a little before 11 a.mand died of his injuries after6 in the afternoon.
Autopsy reports show Saenz hadDMAA in his system, it’s a component found in the synthetic drug known as bath salts.
There will be a group protesting the killing of Saenz Saturday, June 1.
The Coalition for Justice will meet from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m at Todd Ware park in Northeast El Paso.
