YISD board to vote on health insurance plan tonight

It’s a big night for Ysleta school district employees.

The school board will decide how much money thousands of the district’s workers will be paying for health care coverage next year.

District employees were shocked when new insurance plans were introduced during the Sept. 11 school board meeting.

Premiums and deductibles were up steeply — in some cases, by more than 100 percent. For example, teachers who subscribe as an individual under Plan A were paying $90 per month for coverage. With the change, their paycheck deduction would be $211 per month.

YISD spokeswoman Patricia Ayala told ABC-7 she is expecting there will be an entirely new plan presented at tonight’s meeting, although the cost of premiums and coverage will still most likely go up.

The board must approve a plan for the 2014 year tonight.
