Sunland Park appoints a new mayor
It’s round two for Javier Perea, 25, who was appointed mayor by the Sunland Park City Council on Wednesday.
The vote was six to one, with Mayor pro-tem Isabel Santos voting against.
Perea was sworn in as mayor back in April, but had to step down after the attorney general ruled that council violated the Open Meetings Act by not allowing everyone inside a packed City Hall.
This time officials say everything was by-the-book, and Perea is ready to get to work.
“It’s been too long that the city has been stagnant and we need some change. We need things to start developing within the city, so I’m happy that there is a leader now in place that can start moving the city forward,” Perea told ABC-7.
Perea could be sworn in within the next two to three days.
