City adopts new hours for placing temporary signs in city parkways
The City of El Paso has created new hours for placing temporary signs in City parkways.
Temporary signs, such as those for garage sales, political campaigns and advertising for businesses, are now allowed in the parkway between the hours of 6 a.m. and 8 p.m.
Signs placed in the parkway – the area between the curb and sidewalk – must be removed daily during non-permitted hours.
The change is effective immediately after the proposal was approved at City Council as part of an amendment to Title 15 of the El Paso City Code.
Other changes are that signs placed in parkways with commercial or non-commercial messages do not require permits but must:
-Be portable and either a two-sided, single panel style sign or two connected sign panels commonly referred to as “A-frame” or “tent” style;
-Not contain lighting;
-Be freestanding, without requiring staking into the ground;
-Have a face that does not exceed 5 square feet and is made out of metal, wood, plastic or hardboard;
-Have a frame constructed entirely out of wood and/or metal (non-commercial signs are exempt from this requirement);
-Have a sign area that does not exceed 9 square feet or 36 inches in any direction.
City code does not allow signs of any kind to be placed on utility poles, street medians, or other public right of ways.
Signs in violation of code will be removed and disposed of by the city. Violators risk citations and/or fines. To learn about all municipal sign requirements, the public may contact the city’s Code Compliance Division at 599-6290.
