Fight near Clint ISD school leaves deputy pulling gun
A fight near a Montana Vista middle school on Thursday resulted in a Sheriff’s deputy pulling his gun.
It happened at the intersection of Greg Street and Black Bear Lane, right in front of East Montana Middle School — but not on school grounds.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the fight involved more than a dozen teens, some who appeared to be students from nearby Mountain View High School. The fight and the fact a gun was pulled by a deputy left parents in the area frightened for their children and seeking an explanation.
“I happen to look over and I see a little ruckus going on,” said Adrian Cisneros, who manages an auto shop across the street from East Montana Middle School. “The fight escalated, they stopped traffic, from there they got bystanders, kids, looky-loos started looking.”
According to the Sheriff’s Office, a group of 15 to 20 kids were involved in the fight.
“One of the youngsters jumped in his vehicle, it was a black SUV,” Cisneros said. “He was trying to back out, trying to leave because he figured it was over, but the officer had to pull his weapon to let them know, ‘Hey, you’ve got to get off the vehicle.'”
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the SUV matched the description of a vehicle used in an aggravated assault the day before at Mountain View High. Two teens got into the SUV and ignored commands from the deputy. That’s when the deputy, fearing for the safety of those in the street, drew his weapon and pointed it at the driver.
“The way I look at it, he don’t know if the kid is gonna throw the car at them, if the kid was going to back up and run someone else over,” Cisneros said.
Cisneros added that several parents were picking up their children from the middle school at the time.
“I happened to be around the area to pick up my child and I got scared,” said a parent, who asked not to be identified. “I think we have a right to know what’s going on. We need to protect our kids. There’s no communication when something like this happens. They want to keep everything private and I think that’s wrong.”
A spokeswoman for Clint Independent School District told ABC-7 “the incident occurred off campus grounds and was not a school related issue. However, we can assure the community that the administration and staff of our schools and the district make the safety and security of our students a priority every day.”
After several commands were given by the Sheriff’s deputy, the two teens stepped out of the vehicle. According to the Sheriff’s Office, one was arrested for outstanding warrants and all parties involved were issued citations.
