Uber Car Service Comes to El Paso
The Uber car service has made its way to the Borderland.
The service is used all used through a smartphone application that pinpoints your location and alerts the closest Uber driver to pick you up.
Uber claims its rates are 10 percent less than normal taxi fees, faster and cleaner. Some of the people who spoke with ABC-7 said they are not opposed to trying the alternative solution.
“If there is any way to save some money and be quicker, I think that is a good thing for anybody,” Gilbert Flores said.
But this still causes concern for the local taxi companies in El Paso. The Vice President of Checker and Yellow Cab Rebecca Escobar, said this service is not good for their business.
“As a middleman, fares charged to consumers will increase to pay for this middleman service,” Escobar said. “And local taxis can manage the city more efficiently than a company based in another city.”
But for now, Uber is available to everyone with the app, and will be free for the first two weeks of service.
