Chihuahuas play doubleheader today to make up for rainout
It rained cats and dogs in downtown El Paso Tuesday night, and that caused the Chihuahuas to postpone their game.
On Wednesday, it was a completely different story, as it looked like a great day to play some Triple-A baseball.
“They started putting the cover out right away. Next thing you know it’s raining, raining, raining and we’re waiting, waiting, waiting,” one fan recounted outside the stadium.
Puddles still linger in the ballpark, some in spots where people were seeking refuge from the rain on Tuesday. When a massive monsoon thunderstorm rolled through downtown El Paso, the team experienced its first home rainout.
“Very thankful for the rain. We easily went under the doghouse and sat it out,” one woman said after she exchanged tickets at the box office.
Chihuahuas social media kept fans informed. First calling a rain delay, before ultimately postponing.
Due to the rainout a large number of fans are here at the box office exchanging tickets for another Monday or Tuesday game, and the team has to play a doubleheader to make up for the missed game.
The Chihuahuas are now playing two seven-inning games Wednesday against the Albuquerque Isotopes. The second game will start a half hour after the first ends.
“KVIA Doppler showed the storm being on us at 7 p.m. and there was a severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 8 p.m. In the interest of safety and a storm clearly being upon us, we decided to wait. I would rather err on the side of safety,” Chihuahuas General Manager Brad Taylor said in an e-mailed response to questions. He added that it didn’t stop raining at the ballpark until 10:40 p.m.
Fans say the experience won’t stop them from returning. For those still needing to exchange tickets, there are 9 Monday-Tuesday games left in the season.
