‘Border Convoy’ stalls traffic on I-10 Sunday afternoon

Traffic on the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 came to a complete stop Sunday afternoon after members of Border Convoy claimed a truck tried to run them off the road.

Border Convoy is a group of individuals that calls itself a coalition of citizens who share a deep concern for what they call “the invasion currently happening.”

This is the same group that held protests in Murrieta, California last month. Protestors blocked a bus, with Central American immigrants, from entering a Border Patrol station.

Border Convoy was traveling from Murietta to McAllen, Texas, holding rallies in Phoenix and Eloy, Arizona.

The convoy’s itinerary posted on its website stated possible rally stops in Las Cruces and El Paso, with a scheduled stay overnight in El Paso.

Border Convoy was traveling with several vehicles as part of its fleet, when a member called 911 and claimed a black pick-up truck tried to run them off the road.

The group streamed the incident live on its website.

“When we pulled into town here and as soon as we got into town some bozo in a truck up there, pulled over and threatened me and boxed me in with another pick-up truck like they were gonna jump my (expletive) or something,” said Greg Leclaire

Just after 5 p.m. El Paso Police got a report of a person with a gun near Trowbridge and Delta and minutes later the Border Convoy officers pulled over the Border Convoy at I-10 east and Lomaland.

The investigation forced the freeway to shut down as pro-immigration protestors quickly lined up along the freeway with signs against Border Convoy.

It is unclear if any of the drivers involved were carrying firearms.

“They don’t represent our community at all. And they were coming to impose something, a vision of the world that we don’t really agree with,” said Gio Acosta, a student at the University of Texas at El Paso.

Contrary to what Border Convoy’s website stated, Leclaire said they had no intention of stopping in El Paso.

Members of the convoy said they plan on pressing charges against their alleged aggressors.

Meanwhile, an EPPD spokesman said responding officers were not able to establish probable cause, therefore no arrests were made.

The Border Convoy was allowed to continue its trip. They will be in McAllen, Texas August 9.

Border Convoy later posted a tweet that read: “What happened in El Paso proves the border is absolutely dangerous to be around. Where is the federal government???”

Another tweet thanked EPPD “for their expert handling of the attack on us and for getting our convoy safely on way without further threat”.
