Coronado advances in NM high school hockey playoffs
The Coronado High hockey team beat Albuquerque La Cueva 5-1 Saturday morning in the New Mexico Interscholastic Ice Hockey League state tournament. The T-Birds are the top seed in the tournament after posting a 20-1 regular season record.
After a first round bye and this morning’s win over the La Cueva Bears, the T-Birds’ next game is set for 8:30pm Saturday night against the winner of the St. Pius – Cibola game later this morning. Cibola is the second-seed and defending champion. St. Pius is the third seed.
Coronado plays in the composite division of the NMIIHL, where teams include players from other schools that don’t have hockey teams. It’s a coed club league. Travel and other costs are paid by the players’ parents, not the EPISD.
The tournament is a double-elimination format. The championship is played next weekend in Santa Fe.
