EPPD Officially Unveils New Patrol Cars
The police units with the white bodies, blue stripes and the colorful department shield are on the way out. New patrol cars, with a more modern look, are being phased in.
“The Crown Victoria’s were phased out, so we weren’t using those any longer, ” said El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen. His department unveiled its new units Monday morning at the Dick Poe Dodge dealership off Airway.
ABC-7 first showed you photos of the new design a couple of weeks ago.
According to Allen, when the police department buys new patrol vehicles, it normally goes out of town to the lowest bidder. This time, it bought the $56,000 Dodge Charger’s at Dick Poe Dodge, meaning the money will stay in El Paso.
“These are six cylinders, as opposed to V-8’s, so they’re a little more economical,” said Allen, “but they still have the same performance that we saw in the Crown Victoria.”
Allen tells ABC-7 his department bought 29 Dodge Chargers and three new SUV’s. The plan is to eventually replace all of the Crown Victoria’s still in use.
