NAMI El Paso Hosts Candlelight Vigil for Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

El Paso, TX (KVIA-TV)-Suicide is the second leading cause of death for young people ages 10 to 14 and 15 to 24 in the United States. Each year, 5.5% of U.S. adults have serious thoughts of suicide. To remember those we have lost and to raise awareness about suicide prevention, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) El Paso invites everyone in the community to its annual Suicide Prevention Awareness Month Candlelight Vigil.

This year’s event follows NAMI’s national Suicide Prevention Month theme: "Start a Conversation. Be the Difference." Too often, people respond to suicide with silence and stigma.

According to NAMI El Paso, the evening will feature personal stories, time for reflection, and a candle lighting ceremony to remember loved ones lost to suicide. There will also be information about local mental health resources.

This event is free and open to everyone.

If you or someone you know is struggling, you can call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, which is available 24/7. Three out of four people who have contacted 988 say they received the help they needed. For more information, resources, or support, the NAMI HelpLine is available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. MT at 800-950-6264, or you can text "NAMI" to 62640.
