Mayor talks about business outlook for El Paso

El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser discussed the city’s business outlook for 2015 at a luncheon Wednesday hosted by the El Paso Central Business Association.

The luncheon was held at the Camino Real Hotel in downtown El Paso.

Leeser touted his “El Paso. Open For Business” initiative and the number of jobs that it has brought to the city in the past year.

The mayor and local business leaders have spent more than a year traveling around the U.S. promoting El Paso.

Bringing more jobs to the Sun City has been a major goal for Leeser since he took office, and he said it is still a priority for this year.

The mayor dropped a hint while talking to ABC-7 about another jobs announcement expected Thursday.

“We’re very excited that we have kept doing what we said we were going do. This Thursday we have another announcement of another company coming to our great city,” Leeser said.

He would not give any further details.

In the last few months, companies like Charles Schwab, Schneider Electric and Champlain Cable Corp. announced they will be bringing jobs to the city.

ADP has announced that it is expanding its company and bringing 1,100 more jobs.

The Texas Workforce Commission announced in October that the unemployment rate in El Paso dropped to 6.1 percent.

At the same time in 2013, the unemployment rate was 7.8 percent.
