County rule change puts golf tournament in jeopardy

A long running golf tournament in the city could be ending after the county says it can’t just give it space for free.

The county wants to make sure it’s being fair to all groups and people trying to use the Ascarate golf course. But the organizers of the Ascarate Junior Golf Tournament said the new rules could put an end to the 50 year old event.

“It’s always been free,” said David Martinez, president of the tournament. “Or they’ve given us the golf course for 52 years. We’ve been doing this for 52 years. My dad started this tournament in 1962.”

At issue is a rule that the county now says is being unevenly applied. Different groups were getting different treatments from the county seemingly without reason. A rule approved by commissioners in 2011 requires basic fees to be applied to most if not all users of the course.

Commissioners said that doesn’t mean they want the tournament to end.

“Absolutely, we’d like to see it continue,” said Carlos Leon, commissioner for precinct 1. “And I know we’ll do everything possible to help the tournament succeed, but at the same time we have to be as fair to all the other tournaments that play within that same age group that take place at Ascarate.”

Martinez said that his organization and family is committed to continuing the non-profit tournament if they can, but may not be able to past this year if costs jump from what they’re used to.

He said it would be a blow to the volunteers and family, along with the legacy of his father.

“In fact,” Martinez said, “The street leading into the golf course or into the park is Manny Martinez. They named it after him for everything he’s done for the kids and stuff, and for being a good golfer. Me and my family and good friends that run this, we do it for my dad’s sake.:

Martinez said that the tournament, which costs $25 dollars to entry and covers part of a national tournament in San Diego for the winner, has nearly 200 boys and girls participate every year.

Leon added that commissioners hope to work with him, and possibly personally help fund raise if the fees can’t be lowered.
