The Jazz Exchange Launches Full-Year Academy for Young Musicians

El Paso, TX (KVIA-TV) — The Jazz Exchange has announced the launch of its Jazz Academy Program, a comprehensive, full-year after-school initiative dedicated to nurturing young musicians ages 11 to 18. Hosted at Sanchez Studio, located at 4671 Montana Ave., the program offers students an immersive jazz education experience that goes far beyond standard music lessons.

Participants in the Jazz Academy will study jazz improvisation, ensemble performance, music history, and musicianship, while also developing vital skills such as confidence, leadership, and collaboration. The Academy’s mission is not only to create skilled musicians, but also to cultivate positive, empowered individuals through mentorship and community support.

The schedule includes weekly ensembles such as the Satchmo Blues Ensemble, Jazz Messengers, and the Youth Jazz Orchestra, led by renowned instructors Ricardo Castellano and Abel Mireles. For adults, the Academy also offers a Jazz Combo class, welcoming musicians ages 19 and up.

One of the Academy’s standout achievements is its record of success: six graduates have earned full-ride scholarships to music schools, both locally and nationally. “We strive to give our students the skills, confidence, and opportunities they need to pursue their dreams,” said a representative from The Jazz Exchange.

Understanding that financial barriers can prevent talented students from accessing quality music education, The Jazz Exchange provides scholarships and is actively encouraging community support through the upcoming El Paso Giving Day on October 15th. All donations will benefit the Jazz Academy Scholarship Fund, helping ensure that all aspiring musicians have the opportunity to participate, regardless of their financial circumstances.
