AAA Texas: Statewide Pump Price Average Drops Two Cents This Week
The current statewide average for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is $3.10, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. That price is two cents less than one week ago and six cents less than one year ago. The statewide average in Texas is 19 cents less than the national average of $3.29. Of the major metropolitan areas in the state, the survey finds drivers in El Paso are paying the most at $3.15, and drivers in Amarillo are paying the least at $2.97.
The majority of states saw pump prices decline over the last week but the drops were minimal. Increasing retail gas prices in the center of the country was linked to extremely cold weather causing refinery issues, which pressured prices higher. However, sub-zero temperatures can also decrease demand for gasoline, which could put some downward pressure on prices.
“As we continue to see cold fronts move across the state we encourage people to keep their vehicle maintained for winter driving,” said AAA Texas/New Mexico Representative Doug Shupe. “This includes making sure your battery is fully charged and terminals are tight and free of corrosion, tires are inflated according to manufacturer recommendations, there’s sufficient tread on your tires, and make sure all your vehicle’s lights and signals are in good working condition.”
