The ‘X’

Even if you haven’t crossed the bridge in years, there’s little chance you’ve missed that enormous red structure rising above the landscape of the Mexican border.

But do you know what it is?

It’s called “La Equis,” the “X.”

The sculpture was created by famed Mexican artist Sebastian. The work is a tribute to Cd. Juarez’s namesake, Mexican PresidentBenito Juarez.

Juarez was remembered for changing the spelling of Mexico’s name in the 1800s, exchanging the ‘J’ in Mejico to an ‘X.’

The two intersecting arms of the ‘X’ symbolize the merging of two different cultures in Mexico, los Indios and los Espanoles.

Being the first president with Aztec blood, Benito Juarez is credited with bringing together the races.

Artist Sebastian returns to the borderland on Friday to talk about his work at the El Paso Museum of Art.

Sebastian’s enormous artwork is featured throughout the world in places including New York, Dublin and Mexico City to name a few.

The presentation at the museum is hosted by the Mexican Consul General Jacob Prado. It is open to the public and free of charge.
