New low-income housing causes neighborhood uproar

Home builder, Tropicana Homes, is now building 152 low-income housing units in far east El Paso.

But nearby neighbors are not happy with the ongoing changes. Multiple neighbors said these new apartments will increase traffic in the area, overcrowd the schools and ultimately lower their property value.

“It will overcrowd our schools, and traffic will be a nightmare,” one resident said.

“There are some $700,000 and $800,000 homes right across the hill,” another resident said. “We know this will devalue our property.”

Neighbors have created a group to put a stop to Tropicana Homes called the Rancho Del Sol Association. The group has already received more than 300 signatures and is now looking to Sen. Jose Rodriguez and others for their support.

The president of the group, Michael Deaner, said this project needs to stop immediately.

“Stop this project,” Deaner said. “We want it stopped immediately. This is not good for our neighborhood.”

Rancho Del Sol is holding a public meeting Thursday at 7 p.m. at 1050 Loma Verde to discuss further options to put a halt to the ongoing project.
