Schools and law enforcement officials remember 9/11
Schools across the borderland are remembering what happened 13 years ago.
The Army JROTC students of New Mexico State University continue their annual 9/11 tradition this year.
Every year, JROTC students take part in a 9/11 run. They also write the names of nearly the 3,000 victims who perished on that day.
The event took the students nine hours to complete. All of this took place on the international mall in the center of campus.
ABC-7 had a chance to speak to one of the JROTC students, Emily Rossen, who helped organize this years event. Rossen tells ABC-7 she is proud to honor those people and looks forward to serving her country. She says the names should draw a lot of attention from students and staff who frequent the area.
The Socorro Independent School District announced that various campuses had different events planned.
Americas High, 12101 Pellicano Dr., will have a 30-minute ceremony in the school’s rotunda. It will include members from student council, orchestra, NJROTC, cheerleaders, choir members and flags. Socorro Middle, 321 Bovee Rd., staff will be placing ribbons on some of the pillars near the visitor’s entry. The students also will be creating a huge sign that will be hung at the entrance of the school for all to see. Socorro High, 10150 Alameda Ave., students and staff will be meeting at the flagpole. Taps will be played and emergency response groups will be present as they honor those who lost their lives on 9/11. Montwood High, 12000 Montwood Dr., ceremony with the student body and staff will be held at the school. The NJROTC will be present to represent the colors and to have a moment of silence with taps played by Montwood’s band. Flags will be raised at half-staff to remember the fallen. Hueco Elementary, 300 Old Hueco Tanks Rd., students will be dressed in red, white and blue and form the word USA.
El Paso Fire, Sheriff’s and Police departments will also honor those who lost their lives during the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
The special ceremony will be at the firefighters memorial park. The ceremony begins at 9 a.m.
