today is a day of rememberance. we honor the armed service members who made the ultimate sacrifice today is a day of rememberance. this is video of the 60- year tradition known as ‘flags in’ at arlington cemetery. the 3rd u-s infantry regiment placed more than 228- thousand flags at grave sites to honor the nations fallen heroes. good monday morning this memorial day. i’m stephanie valle. hillary floren is off. the fort bliss national cemetery will also honor the sacrifice of our service members today. the annual memorial day ceremony begins this morning at 9 am. this is video of last year’s service. this is the time to show our gratitude to all soldiers, marines, sailors, airmen, coast guardsmen, and merchant marines who sacrificed so much. the national moment of rembrance encourages all americans to pause wherever they are at 3 p.m. local time for a minute of silence to rember. this memorial day weekend bought plenty of events to the borderland — including the klaq balloon-fest which is still going on today. this is a live look from wet-n- wild world. if you hurry, there’s still time to get in on the launch this morning. you can catch the free launch until 8- 30 this morning. let’s go now to stormtracker dan martinez who’s filling in for krystal this morning. a live look at stormtrack doppler radar is showing… west to southwest winds will bring warmer mostly dry weather to southern new mexico and west texas through wednesday afternoon with only slight chances of mainly high mountain thunderstorms. a passing low pressure system will generate more showers and thunderstorms over the borderland wednesday night…thursday and thursday night with most of the storms occurring east of the rio grande. a weak cold front will also bring chances for thunderstorms next weekend…again mainly over the higher mountains and for areas east of the rio grande. we’ll talk more about what to expect for the rest of this week and focus on the hour- by-hour forecast for the holiday up ahead in your full forecast. to more stormtrack weather now — record rainfall and devastating weather has now turned deadly for at least 3 people in texas and oklahoma. in san marcos, texas — the blanco river rose 3 feet in just hours — wiping out roads and sending hundreds to the roof of their homes. emergency officials say up to 400 homes have been destroyed. we’ll have more of your stormtrack weather coverage in just a few minutes. but first — new information on last week’s deadly shooting by ruidoso police. a report by new mexico state police indicates that 27- year-old timothy jones was wielding a sword when officers responded to a home for an alleged domestic disturbance. according to investigators, jones then aggressively charged toward officers with the sword. that’s when the 2 officers opened fire, killing him. the officers are currently on administrative leave — which is standard procedure. two families are without a home this morning, after a fire broke out in fabens. this fire happened yesterday afternoon on the 100 block of first street. both those home, now a total loss. abc-7’s luke lyddon spoke with the families and has their story. “You just never know. i was jus really scared that one of my family members was in there.” it was th type of situation that puts you at a loss of words. “it was kind o terrifying for a while until we found out they were okay. The house is material it can be replaced, but we were worried something happened to them.” 5 differen fire departments showed up to the 100 block of first street in fabens to put out the fire that destroyed two mobile homes. when the blaze erupted, many family members were unsure if their loved ones were caught in the blaze. “they weren’t answering their phone and we didn’t know whether they couldn’t or were involved in it.” she says “She doesnt even know what to think because normally you see it happen to other people and today it unfortunately happened to me.” the cause of the fire is still under investigation. but officials say the flames started in the rear of one of the mobile homes then spread to a neighboring mobile home. both homes destroyed. damage to both properties — estimated $112- thousand dollars. the families are devastated, but thankful no one was inside when the fire ripped through their homes. “it kind of took a weight off my back you know? At least i got all of them with me.” fir fighters at the scene told me the fabens fire chief was injured while putting out the fire–but they expect him to be okay. e-m-s crews took him to a nearby hospital as precaution. the families know it’s going to be a while before they get back up on their feet, but everyone is trying to stay positive. “things happen, and hopefully w get the support from everybody to just keep going.” and that was abc-7’s luke lyddon reporting. the red cross is helping the families who lost their homes. the bankruptcy filing by el paso children’s hospital continues to send shock waves through the community. and abc-7 is still digging deeper into what happened. good morning el paso’s andrew j. polk is live with a recap of abc-7 x-tra. andrew? good morning stephanie. while not wholly unexpected, el paso children’s bankruptcy filing did come as a surprise to many public officials. and on last night’s abc-7 x- tra, we got a chance to find out more about what’s been happening behind the scenes. county commissioners say umc – and thus taxpayers are owed an explanation from children’s – because they’ve been essentially subsidizing the children’s hospital for the last year. children’s leadership says umc has been oppressive, practically a bully – who’s end game is to take over children’s. on the show last night was dr. carlos gutierrez… one of the first members of the el paso children’s hospital board… who fought for it to be built. he says that that the service contracts between umc and children’s were heavily weighted in umc’s favor… with the first batch presented just days before children’s opened it’s doors. “We were told, our children’s hospital board, if we don’t get this thing signed, if we don’t get these things signed, this hospital will not open next week, it’s going to open in one, two, three months.
