Child dies after multi-vehicle crash on I-10 Wednesday night
A child has died after being involved in a multiple vehicle crash on I-10 East Wednesday night.
The crash happened at about 9:50 p.m. and included six vehicles and resulted in several people having to be transported to area hospitals.
Police say that a 2015 GMC Sierra, driven by 36-year-old Alejandro Hernandez, struck the rear of a 1996 Ford Taurus and initiated a chain reaction crash that involved six vehicles.
All six vehicles were in the far right lane of I-10 East prior to the crash occurring.
The 1996 Taurus had five people inside of the vehicle, three of which were children.
One of the children, 6-year-old Mark Viescas Jr., has died at a local hospital due to his injuries.
Police say none of the three children in the vehicle were restrained in booster or child safety seats.
Investigators are still trying to determine if seatbelts were used.
As of Thursday afternoon, no charges have been filed and investigators do not believe alcohol was a factor in this crash. The crash remains an open investigation and no other information is available at this time.
