Governor Susana Martinez reacts to explosives at Las Cruces churches

Governor Susana Martinez gave a news conference Sunday evening addressing the two explosives that went off at two churches in Las Cruces.

The first explosion happened near a mailbox outside of Calvary Baptist Church a little after 8 o’clock Sunday morning. The second happened in a trash can outside of Holy Cross Church nearly a half hour later.

Las Cruces Police says no one was injured.

Martinez says that whoever did this, will be brought to justice.

“Only a coward would place an explosive device in a place of peace and a place of worship,” Martinez said. “Whoever did this will feel full pressure of the law.”

New Mexico State Police Chief Pete Kassetas stressed the explosives that went off at both churches Sunday morning were not firecrackers.

“These devices were intended I believe to do harm and could have done harm to people,” Kassetas said.

Kassetas says they do not know if the two explosions were connected. He says they don’t know if this was a terrorist attack but they aren’t ruling anything out at this point.

“New Mexicans can have faith and confidence that law enforcement, federal and local, will tirelessly work until whoever is responsible is brought to justice.”

Anyone with any information is asked to call 1-800-CALL-FBI.
