only to toss it out without touching it? unfortunately, you’re not alone. americans throw away 40-percent of the food we buy each year. costing the average family about 15-hundred dollars annually. in this week’s fit for ’15 — my co-anchor stephanie valle has tips on how decrease food waste: 3.56 this is an example of what not to do — these are some leeks we bought with the idea of making a salad. but time has gone on and they’re going a little wilted. so don’t let that happen to you by planning ahead. 4.07 registered dietician bridget swinney repeated that over and over. 6.15 planning is such an important tip. 6.16 other tips: before you shop — make a menu. 6.10 think about what your family likes to eat and write it down. 6.13 the ads in the grocery store. because we tend to buy things that are on sale. if you look at the ads, you can make a menu. 6.01 also — bigger isn’t always better. 4.29 you can get a lot of produce that’s already cut up and ready to eat. and even though it’s more expensive per pound, it might be more economical because you’re not going to waste it. 4.37 think of multiple ways to use the bulk items you do buy. 6.27 when you have leftover vegetables when you just have a small amount, you can put them into a soup, you can put them into a smoothie. 6.34 6.36 the pieces of vegetables that we don’t use, the carrot tops and the inside of celery, you can set them aside and make a stock out of it. 6.43 other tips: think of multiple uses for leftovers — like in a lunch or in a different form at dinner. write the date on leftovers in the fridge — or freeze it for another day. and — 8.51 my husband can always tell when i’m hungry when i go to the grocery store when i come back with things we don’t really need. 8.55 don’t go hungry because you do end up buying things you may not eat or you try and don’t really like and it goes to waste. 9.05 saving money, food — while feeding your family. sv, abc-7. check out kvia.com’s “fit for 15” page for recipes and stories. we also post ideas on our kvia-tv pinterest
