Season for Rainbows

This is the time of year we get a chance to see rainbows. Our monsoon contributes to the beautiful display of colors across the sky.

Rainbows are caused by having millions of tiny rain droplets multiply in the sky. The individual drops act like a prism separating the white light from the sun into different colors. White light is made up of 7 colors. These colors are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Here’s how a rainbow forms – as the white light enters the drop of rain it then proceeds to exit with a specific color. We need a whole lot of raindrops to form a rainbow. Without all the drops the many colors we see would not materialize.

To see a rainbow, the sun is always to your back while viewing. In fact, while it is raining, if you can see the shadow of your head in front of you that’s a good position to see a potential rainbow – provided the conditions are right.

We still have a good month of potential rain ahead of us so enjoy rainbow hunting and get ready to snap some more pictures – I’ll be glad to see what you shoot. You can forward the pics to my email on this page.
