Las Cruces Man Arrested, Accused of Shooting Toddler in the Eye with a BB Gun
Police arrest a man accused of shooting his girlfriend’s 16-month-old son in the eye with a BB gun.
Lorenzo Ordaz, 30, of 2230 Dona Ana Road, is charged with one count of negligent child abuse resulting in great bodily harm. The charge is a first-degree felony.
The boy was injured Wednesday night. Neighbors called police after they saw Ordaz holding the weeping child in his arms outside their mobile home.
When officers arrived, they found the boy bleeding from the eye. Ordaz allegedly left the home.
EMS crews airlifted the boy to El Paso Children’s Hospital. Doctors there told investigators the boy’s eye was severely damaged and there is little to no chance of the child regaining use of the eye. The injury is expected to result in several surgeries, police said.
Detectives received conflicting statements on how the boy was injured. They believe Ordaz was firing a 4.5mm BB gun in the side yard while in the company of the child.
