‘The Martian’ tops weekend box office, ‘Sicario’ comes in third

“Sicario” finished third in this weekend’s U.S. box office totals in its third week of release and first in wide release.

Sicario is Spanish for hitman.

“In the lawless border area stretching between the U.S. and Mexico, an idealistic FBI agent Kate (Blunt) is enlisted by an elite government task force official (Brolin) to aid in the escalating war against drugs. Led by an enigmatic consultant with a questionable past (Del Toro), the team sets out on a clandestine journey forcing Kate to question everything that she believes in order to survive,” reads the film’s synopsis on the official website.

From BoxOfficeMojo.com, “Adding an additional 2,561 theaters this weekend,Sicariois also an unprecedented release as I struggled to find apt comparisons formy weekend predictions, yetmy numberslined up pretty close. Playing in 2,620 theaters,Sicariobrought in$12 millionthis weekend.Similar moviesmight be films such asA History of ViolenceorEx Machinaearlier this year as both are R-rated, adult-targeted features that slowly expanded over the course of three weekends, but neither expanded as large asSicarioin their third weekends and it looks as if the audience supportingSicario‘s impressive run also liked the film, earning it an “A-” CinemaScore. This could mean long legs and, perhaps, some well-deserved Oscar nominations for that score, cinematography and a couple of those solid performances.”

“The Martian” came in first at the box office, followed by “Hotel Transylvania 2.”

“Sicario” has a 93 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes from 152 critics and a 91 percent audience score.

Critics Consensus from Rotten Tomatoes:Led by outstanding work from Emily Blunt and Benicio del Toro, “Sicario” is a taut, tightly wound thriller with much more on its mind than attention-getting set pieces.
