Longtime educator loses battle with cancer

Former Ysleta ISD teacher and board trustee Deby Lewis lost her battle with cancer Saturday evening.

Lewis was a teacher and coach at Eastwood High School for more than 35 years. She served as a board member for four years. She ran for re-election this year but lost.

She died Saturday evening with her family by her side.

In April, as concerns arose about Lewis’ ability to serve a full term as she received treatment, her mother told ABC-7 doctors assured her Lewis would be okay.

“She’s going to be fine after her treatments. She’ll go at a slower pace, obviously. But she doesn’t have another job, this is her job. She loves it dearly.”
