Mother worried about security at Tippin Elementary
out to abc-7 concerned about security at her child’s school. she says her child walked out of the school without anyone noticing. now she’s worried it’ll happen again and she wants the school to do something. we went to the school to get some answers. abc-seven’s top story…. abc-7’s josie ortegon is live with more: estela. this parent says she loves her child’s school but when it comes to security–there’s need for improvement: the woman, who asked not to be identified, says students at mary n. tippin elementary school are dismissed in groups– those who take the bus and those who are picked up by their parents. she says her kindergartner walked out with the wrong group just before school let out for the day. her son then realized he was in the wrong place and walked by himself across the school yard to the parent pick up location. the woman says no one noticed. she says she isn’t just worried about students leaving school unknowingly, but also about people walking into the school: concerned parent: “people can walk in and out and not notice. i’ve walked in the school and during a certain parade that they had, the staff was incredibly busy. i put my driver’s license down on the desk, and walked back in the school and nobody knew i was there. i mean that could have been anybody walking into the school and i have a six-year old i need to protect.” we spoke with el paso isd. they say the child never left campus and was never in any eminent danger and the child was in the wrong line for no more than three minutes. in a statement they tell abc-7 in part: “the school has spoken with the parent and apologized for any inconvenience the incident may have caused. the school also took the opportunity to remind this and other parents that it is important for them to talk to their children about the importance of following proper protocols for drop- off and pick-up times. “the district relies on partnerships with parents to create safe environments in all of our schools.” the parent also says the school’s prinicipal said adding hall monitors would be an option, but that there wasn’t enough staff. coming up on abc-7 at 6, what el paso isd is doing to help better security at all schools and how it’ll help ward off any sex offenders. jo, abc7.
