The Borderland is losing its top wildlife rehabilitator

After 16 years, Josie Karam of Second Chance Wildlife is retiring.

Karam is closing the aviary on her property in the Upper Valley. She has taken in more than 10,000 injured and orphaned birds and other small wildlife; with help from volunteers she has rehabilitated and returned many of the animals to the wild.

The nonprofit has struggled because it has to rely completely on private donations.
