Mother of Trayvon Martin to speak at YWCA’s Women’s Luncheon
The mother of Trayvon Martin will be the keynote speaker at the YWCA’s 23rd annual Women’s Luncheon.
Sybrina Fulton, founded the Trayvon Martin Foundation following the shooting death of her son. Martin was the 17-year-old who was shot and killed by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, on Feb. 26, 2012 in Sanford, Fla.
The foundation’s aims to “create awareness of how violent crime impacts the families of the victims and to provide support and advocacy for those families.”
The YWCA’s 23rd annual Women’s Luncheon takes place April 23, at the convention center in Downtown El Paso.
Separately, the YWCA announced that the Prudential Foundation recently awarded the YWCA El Paso del Norte Region $150,000 as part of the Prudential’s $870,000 effort to build a “next-generation” workforce in El Paso. The grant will help the YWCA incorporate a new math initiative for children attending nationally accredited YWCA afterschool programs and get them interested in STEM. The money will also support a customer service training certification in partnership with Workforce Solutions Borderplex for under-employed adults.
“I am excited to announce this new partnership,” Dr. Sandra Braham, CEO of the YWCA, said in a news release. “This new funding speaks to our mission of empowerment by providing opportunity for adults to gain additional support in finding employment and preparing youth for a successful future in STEM careers. Funding from The Prudential Foundation will allow us to enhance our programs and provide better service to the community.”
