an act of terror–is is now claiming responsibility for an attack in indonesia. they say they targeted foreigners. the real i-d law is in effect in the borderland…and fort bliss is no longer accepting new mexico driver’s licenses to get on post. sentencing will begin this morning in the case of a former el paso county judge guilty of embezzlement. / plus— the installation of an art sculpture on the utep campus is going to shut down an intersection in the area. / a very good morning el paso, las cruces, and juarez. i’m stephanie valle. and i’m hillary floren. good morning, everyone. we’ll get to our first forecast in just a bit—but first…. explosions and gunfire rock the capital of indonesia today. the busy streets of jakarta flooded with police as they try to find the suspects and help the wounded. is is now claiming responsibility for the attack. they say they targeted foreigners and the security forces tasked with protecting them. abc’s stephanie ramos has the details on this story still developing now. stephanie ramos / abc news blown out windows?smoke billowing into the sky?debris scattered across the busy downtown streets of indonesia’s capital. at least 3 suicide bombers ?detonated their packs?exploding themselves in a starbucks cafe in jakarta .. while gunmen attacked a police station nearby. at least one police officer is dead but the death toll could be much higher. after the first explosion .. chaos erupted in the popular shopping district of the capital that’s home to luxury hotels and foreign embassies. a gun fight ensued between the attackers and anti – terror police squads for more than an hour. while explosions in other parts of the city could be heard?. police intensely searching for other gunmen. so far no one has claimed responsibility for the attack but tensions have been high in indonesia as newer is affiliated groups overshadow older terrorist groups in the region. everyone has been on high alert since christmas after a number of arrests were made across indonesia. counterterrorism advisers say about 500 indonesians have joined isis in syria ….with other jihadi groups pledging support to isis caliphate abu al baghdadi. the u.s. embassy now issuing an alert to all u.s. citizens in jakarta … telling them to stay put —avoid the area until authorities figure out exactly what is going on and who is responsible. tag: starbucks put out a statement on the attacks. saying?our hearts are with the people of indonesia? all starbucks in jakarta will remain closed out of an abundance of caution. stephanie ramos abc news washington now let’s talk weather— westerly winds will bring seasonably mild mostly dry weather to southern new mexico and west texas today and again on friday. however upper level disturbances will produce breezy to windy conditions the next two days along with a few rain and snow showers friday night. conditions will be dry and a little cooler on saturday before warmer mostly dry weather returns early next week. a low pressure system may bring breezy to windy weather along with slight chances of mountain rain or snow on wednesday. more details coming up in just minutes! if you plan to visit fort bliss and you have a new mexico state-issued id then listen up. fort bliss is now implementing the real id act to ensure the post is listen up. fort bliss is now implementing the real id act to ensure the post is following federal laws. abc-7’s denise olivas is live with more… fort bliss just made the announcement in the last 24 hours. for now you can get a temporary visitor’s pass– but that will only be good for a one time use. just this week white sands missile range also announced new mexico driver licenses will no longer be accepted as a valid form of id. that’s because nm driver licenses are not compliant with the real id act of 2005. real id act requirements include proof of legal u.s. residency for holders who want to use them to access certain areas of federal buildings. new mexico state law allows immigrants suspected of being in the country illegally to obtain driver’s licenses. other states not in compliance include illinois, minnesota, missouri and washington. if you have a fort bliss pass based on a non-complaint id like a new mexico drivers license, you must get a new pass. happening today—a sentencing hearing is schedule for today for the former el paso county judge who has been convicted of embezzlement. from our new mexico mobile newsroom …. anthony cobos was found guilty yesterday in las cruces. a chaparral couple said they made payments to him for a mobile home which really belonged to his late step-mother. they learned cobos wasn’t forwarding those payments to the bank … when they received a foreclosure notice. cobos is already serving a four-year sentence for accepting a bribe when he was county judge — now he could face additional time. 5-thousand tickets are up for grabs for parishoners in el paso to see the pope next month in juarez. that’s according to the el paso catholic diocese. those 5-thousand tickets are going to be divided among the parishes. the tickets will be given out for free and those who accept them must not sell them or redistribute them. we checked with the las cruces diocese and they tell us they still don’t know how many tickets they’re getting. pope francis’ visit to juarez will be february 17th . if you have any questions about the pope’s visit… just check out kvia.com- slash-pope. once there, just scroll down the page for a variety of stories.. … inlcuding the pope’s full itinerary … we’ll continue to update the page with new information as we get closer to the pope’s arrival in juarez. even the police can’t escape tickets for distracted driving. this after an el paso police officer crashed into the back of a school bus in the north east yesterday. it happened at the corner of will ruth and dyer just before 8 o’clock in the morning. an abc-7 viewer sent us this photo of the crash. the photo speaks for itself. luckily there were no students on the bus, just the driver and the bus monitor. police say the officer was at fault. the 7 year veteran was cited for driver inattention. now to an abc-7 traffic alert over by the utep campus happening today. the city of el paso will close the a portion of schuster avenue near the spur 1966 roundabout for about eight hours starting at 10 a-m.. contractors plan to shut down the two eastbound lanes from the interstate 10 west off-ramp to the roundabout. they will also close the section of the roundabout that leads to the spur 1966 bridge. the artwork is called “th cloud”… and it’s the city’s latest public art project. weather permitting, a crane will lift the sculpture around 11 a.m. and set it in the center of the roundabout. now it’s time to take a look at the tx-dot traffic cams… still much more to come— the largest powerball in history hit the united states last night— we didn’t win but 3 people in the u.s sure are happy this morning–we’ll tell you where coming up. plus—you won’t believe how many powerball tickets were being sold in matter of minutes here in texas yesterday–we’ll have the details / and later the oscar nominations will be announced at 6:30 this morning–we’ll be taking you live to the announcement. / meteorologist krystal klei has your detailed forecast. krystal… and this is abc-7, where news comes first! new this morning— no confirmed winners in el paso for last night’s powerball—but there were 3 around the county including one in chino hills california—take a look. “chino hills, chino hiills, chino hills, chino hills,.” people swarmed the store late wednesday evening in chino hills following the announcement that a winning jackpot ticket was sold there. the winning numbers were— 4-8- 19-27-34 powerball 10— other winners were reported in tennessee and florida. back here in texas— powerball tickets were selling at a pace of over 144 thousand dollars per minute!
