El Pasoans race and collect food for MLK Day

every year, hundreds of el pasoans come together to honor the legacy of dr. martin luther king jr. by participating in the y-w-c-a’s “race against racism.” participants not only get to enjoy a friendly marathon, they also learn about the y-w-c-a’s mission to eliminate racism and empower women. doppler — these runners enjoyed a beautiful morning. the sun was out and it wasn’t cold. we will see a continued warm and dry weather pattern for much of some of el paso’s neediest families get the food they need. the students, with utep and el paso community, collected and sorted tons of canned food in honor of martin luther king junior day. organizers tell abc-7 they collect an average of 16 tons of food during the holidays every year. the food drive will distribute the food to 11 shelters in our city: carl robinson: “every can helps… you know the thing is they’re giving during thanksgiving, during christmas, but after holidays, the pantries and those shelters are empty. this food drive helps replenish the shelves in those pantries and those agencies that we donate food to.” this is the 16th year the city of el paso helps organize the canned food drive. here’s another live look outside courtesy of the
