a blizzard is pounding the east coast today. the severe weather already turning deadly. we’ll take a look at how that storm is progressing– straight ahead. also, we’ll take a look at a deadly rollover that happened overnight. the crash causing parts of i-10 to close this morning. we’ll give you an update on road conidtions there. it’s a big day for students who are taking the s-a-ts today. but as ashley rodriguez reports, if you’re not in a rush there could be an easier way to test. this is all the news you need to start your saturday, january 23 abc-7’s “good morning el paso weekend starts right now! good morning and thank you for joing us… i’m jamie warren. the winter storms in northeastern states are already causing problems with multiple reports of people dead from the blizzard. we’ll have more on that in a minute… but first, a look at news happening overnight. a one vehicle rollover leaves one person dead, that’s according to a westside police substation command officer. this is a look at the scene from our ’round the clock crew. the crash happened around midnight at i-10 east and schuster exit. we’re still trying to get more information, but it looks like a red vehicle hit the guardrail at the schuster off-ramp and rolled over. special traffic investigators were called to the scene. no word yet on how many passengers were in the vehicle. east bound i-10 was closed this morning at the executive center off ramp but has since reopened. right now, a blizzard is barreling down on the east coast. more than 2 feet of snow is expected in our nation’s capital, there have been thousands of crashes and this massive storm has already turned deadly. abc’s kenneth moton has the latest from the target of the storm…washington, dc. blizzard blast… nats blinding, white out conditions, heavy snow and bone chilling winds… this morning, there are blizzard watches and warnings from dc to new york. airports in the northeast closed… thousands of flights cancelled. sot wendy harrisair traveler can’t wait to get out of town in philadelphia, the streets are covered… a snow emergency is in effect. in dc, it’s predicted to be the biggest blizzard since the 1920s…more than 2 feet of snow expected. sot: mayor bowser/washington dc this is a major storm with life and death implications. this massive winter storm …impacting more than 80 million people… left a blanket of snow in the south. it also wreaked havoc… nats- spinning in kentucky, a 35 mile stretch of i-75 closed leaving more than 3000 drivers stranded in the cold, emergency shelters are open. nats carolina snow plow in the carolinas, georgia and virginia, snow plows are working overtime. there have been thousands of crashes…several people have died. sot scottie sheltonsnow plow operator yes, it’s definitely ice underneath. i’ve slid several times this morning in my dump truck. emergency crews have also been working around to clock…to save even our 4 legged friends. nats come on milo in fairfax station, virginia, this large saint bernard named milo fell through the ice in this freezing lake. firefighters jumped into action, rescued the dog and got him warmed up. this storm has already left hundreds of thousands of people in the dark ..crews are working to restore power. here in dc, people have been told to stay off the streets because it’s only going to get worse. kenneth moton, abc news washington. …stormtrack weather now! it’s been a little ctside. let’s get your with stormtracker iris lopez .synopsis… expect increasing high clouds across the area today. temperatures will warm up into the 60s for lowlands…and upper 40s to right around 50 for the higher elevations of the sacramento mountains. an upper level storm system will bring strong gusty winds to the area sunday along with mostly clear skies and warmer temperatures. cooler and drier conditions will prevail for the beginning of next week. from our new mexico mobile news room… david gutierrez, the dona ana county treasurer who admitted to offering an employee money in exchange for sex refuses to step down from his position – saying he believes the voters still trust him. abc-7 has confirmed that he settled the lawsuit filed against him by a woman who used to work for him. the two decided on a financial settlement. the details on that settlement have not been released. all we’re told is that both parties are satisfied. david gutierrez admitted to offering the employee one thousand dollars in exchange for sex. also, more information is coming out about an elementary school teacher accused of sexual abuse of a child. 45-year old santiago chavez was a special education teacher at fabens elementary. the el paso sheriff’s office sent out a release on thursday, seeking information on his whereabouts. yesterday, they arrested him in downtown el paso. he’s charged with two counts of continuous sexual abuse of a child. fabens i-s-d superintendent alfonso garcia told us the victim was a student in the school district but the alleged sexual abuse did not occur on campus. chavez was placed on administrative leave 2-months ago. our abc-7 i-team obtained court documents that reveal new details about the alleged assault. it states there were two victims — both teenage boys who are related to one another. on one night the victims were sleeping in the same room — when chavez allegedly got into bed with one of them. the victim said he heard his relative telling chavez to stop. authorities also found bodily fluids inside the home where the victims told investigators that an alleged assault occurred. chavez was booked into the el paso county jail under a $500 thousand dollar bond. today is a big day for borderland juniors and seniors taking the s-a-t’s today. but starting this spring — the s- a-t is changing. students taking the test today will be taking the current sat — the new version debuts in march. but some advisors are suggesting students should wait to take the new test. abc-7’s ashlie rodriguez explains. i heard that it’s going to be an entirely new test. it’s probably going to be harder than the last one. and the last one is kind of hard as it is, so i’m kind of worried about that one. but maybe eastwood high student natalie campos shouldn’t be. college board officials say the new sat is more representative of what students study in high school and the skills they need to succeed in college and afterward. the redesigned sat will instead focus on words students use over and over again. instead of words like panegyric, occlusion, phlegmatic — words student rarely use or see – the new exam will focus on words taken from literature, science, the social sciences, or a us founding document. words like:admonish, bombastic, exuberant yeah i’m kind of nervous, but actually i think they’re kind of easy. many agree. lets compare the old and new sat the old has critical reading, writing, math, and an essay you will be penalized for guessing. the new has evidence- based reading and writing, math and the essary is optional essay and you won’t be penalized for guessing. i do think its easier because you don’t have to be writing a lot like before students who decide not to write an essay would see about 50 minutes shaved off the nearly 4 hour test. i think that’s a bad idea because whenever i did the staar test the essay would help me a lot in math, students will see more algebra and problem solving, instead of testing a wide range of math concepts. and the top score goes back to 1,600 with a separate score for the essay, compared with saturday’s possible total of 2,400. i’m a little nervous but i’ve already taken it before so i know what to expect the new test is very similar to the a-c-t. advisors suggest student who absolutely have to take the current s- a-t today, also try the a-c-t. if you don’t have to take the exam today, they suggest waiting until march for the new version. horse racing is on pause after a horse came down with a deadly virus. now officials are worried about other horses and aren’t taking any chances. first it was lead, now another health issue is popping up in flint. officials say the outbreak spiked when the city changed where it gets its water. it is , right now we’ll take a live look at traffic this morning: head over to storm tracker iris lopez stormtrack weather is next!
