Ysleta High students honor Officer Ortiz
o’clock this afternoon… you get a true perspective of how many el pasoans joined the fuenral procession. traffic was blocked at major intersections liked alameda and yarbrough as the long line of cars cut across the lower valley. the procession continued past yselta high school — ortiz’s alma mater. the entire student body wanted to honor their fallen alumni. abc-seven’s ashlie rodriguez continues our complete coverage…. ortiz graduated from ysleta high in 1989. students say once an indian, always an indian. to show their support — the high school’s drum corps, junior r-o-t-c, cheerleaders, dancing spirit and the mascot lined up outside the school. they were joined by the school’s administration, staff and the entire student body. they stood in silence as the procession passed from about 1:30 to 2 this afternoon. the junior r-o-t-c gave an honorary salute as ortiz’s hearse passed by: it didn’t really click until after we were like wow this guy is like we’re from ysleta, he was one of our own…we stood in unity to show once an indian, always an indian hundreds of people lined alameda avenue to say their finals goodbyes. tonight the people he served and protected for nine
