Woman sentenced to 15 years for Intoxication Manslaughter

The woman accused of causing a serious accident that left one woman dead has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Desiree Skaf, who was sentenced Thursday, plead guilty last month to one count of Intoxication Manslaughter with a Vehicle. She was convicted on the same charge.

It was in July of 2013 that Skaf, then 21, rear-ended a 2008 Mazda 3 driven by Iris Bustamante, causing the car to run off the road into a utility pole.

This happened on the 5900 block of Doniphan.

Bustamante and her passenger Janet Balderrama, 25, were both seriously injured and taken to University Medical Center. Balderrama later died from her injuries.

Skaf’s trial was scheduled to begin in February before she plead guilty.

Skaf faced seven to 20 years in prison.
