Residents create online petition to connect Sean Haggerty to South Angora Loop
Northeast residents have created an online petition to create a connection between Sean Haggerty and South Angora Loop.
El Pasoans who live there have been asking for the extension for years. Residents say they’re forced to drive down Mccombs all the way south until they hit Sun Valley if theywant to reach the neighborhood east of Dyer.
“It’s been a problem for a long time. You think they would have fixed it by now,” Northeast resident Yanira Marquez said.
Residents like Brandon Guzman are mobilizing their communities.
“This has been I want to say well over 10 years that it’s been unconnected,” Brandon Guzman said.
Guzman and his friend Corina created an online petition with the hope of convincing the city.
“It’s a complicated process and we get that, but we just want to be able to bring this to their attention and let them know we haven’t forgotten get this fixed,” Guzman said.
Since drivers don’t have an actual connection between Sean Haggerty and Angora Loop, they created a dirt pathway that connects the two areas, but it’s not the safest option.
The dirt route includes a lot of bumps and hills.
“It’s easier for us to to just come down through here than us going down through Dyer,” Marquez said.
The makeshift dirt road is dangerous, especially when it rains and floods.
City Rep Carl Robinson represents the area. He tells Abc-7 the connector would need a bridge that would allow drivers to go over several stormwater tunnels in the area. It’s not cheap either–the bridge would come with a pricetag of $14-million dollars.
Still, Robinson says it’s not a matter of if, but when.
He says the bridge is under consideration for future funding by TxDot, the Metropolitan Planning Organization and the city.
“The northeast is growing as part of the rest of the city. It’s just something that would serve that community better,” Guzman said.
The petition on Change.org has gained 1,100 signatures. Guzman says they’re hoping to get 400 more before presenting it to the city at the end of the month.
