beaumont army medical center is working to get a national accreditation as a baby-friendly hospital by changing how it delivers ceserean section babies. good morning el paso’s denise olivas is live with the story … denise? after a vaginal birth a newborn is immediately handed over to the mother within seconds to help create a bond. during a c-section that wasn’t the case before because the delivery happened in an operating room and sometimes the mother’s well being is at-risk. “we modified ou spaces…created a space that was safe” dr frazier says the benefit of skin to skin contact– it creates a physiological bond between mom and baby– the baby is more likely to attach an breastfeed earlier. kristy goldberg was the first mom at beaumont to have skin to skin contact with baby kaleb after her c-section: “you feel a little nauseous…i would have otherwise” goldberg says it was a special moment for her and her family. beaumont is looking to get that baby friendly hospital accreditatin in 12 to 18 months.
